Tree Establishment Protocol
A practical framework for moving beyond planting targets and supporting young trees through to successful establishment in the landscape.
Trees rarely fail because of one major mistake. More often, they fail through a series of small, disconnected decisions made throughout the establishment process.
Every year, thousands of trees are planted with the best of intentions. Yet planting alone does not guarantee successful establishment.
Many guidance documents explain how trees should be planted. The Tree Establishment Protocol takes a broader view, following the tree from initial concept and design through to successful integration into the landscape. It provides a practical framework and a common language that helps connect everyone involved in the establishment process—from clients and project managers to nurseries, contractors, consultants, maintenance teams and asset owners.
Planting is an event. Establishment is a process. Graduation is the objective.
The ambition to increase tree cover has never been greater. Yet the success of tree planting programmes is still too often measured by the number of trees planted rather than the number that successfully establish.
The Tree Establishment Protocol has been developed to help shift that focus towards long-term outcomes, providing a practical framework that supports successful establishment throughout the early life of every tree.
Why now?
The protocol is intended for anyone involved in the lifecycle of young tree establishment, including but limited to:
local authorities
landscape architects
arboricultural consultants
contractors
developers
community groups
tree officers and asset managers
volunteers involved in young tree care
